I remember sitting on a crowded bus, staring out the window as the city blurred past me. Life had settled into a routine—
wake up, go to work, meet deadlines, come back, sleep, repeat.
After completing my education and reaching a stable point in my career, I expected to feel accomplished.
But instead, I felt… stuck. Not unhappy, not broken—just adrift. Like I was living on autopilot with no deeper sense of direction.
That’s when, while scrolling through YouTube to kill time, I stumbled upon a TED Talk that would change everything:
Simon Sinek’s Start With Why – How Great Leaders Inspire Action
I didn’t know it at the time. This 18-minute video would spark a shift in me. It was a shift I didn’t even realize I needed. It wasn’t just insightful—it was personal. Sinek’s words hit a nerve. They made me question something I had never seriously considered:
“Why do I do what I do?”
This article isn’t just a summary of that talk or the book. It’s a reflection of my journey through confusion. It includes reflection and real transformation. It also proves why this book is a true gem, filled with wisdom that doesn’t fade with time.
If you’ve ever felt like your days are busy but your life lacks meaning, I invite you to read on. Because discovering your “why” might just be the most important thing you ever do.
About Simon Sinek
Simon Sinek is a British-American author, motivational speaker, and leadership expert. He is known for his insightful talks and books on leadership and inspiration. He became globally recognized after his 2009 TED Talk. It was titled “How Great Leaders Inspire Action,” and it introduced the concept of the Golden Circle. It is one of the most viewed TED Talks of all time. Sinek’s work revolves around helping individuals and organizations find their purpose and inspire others.

Simon’s most famous quotes from his book:
“People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” – Simon Sinek
Great leaders and successful organizations don’t start with what they do. They start with why they do it.
His Inspiration Behind Start With Why
Simon Sinek was inspired to write Start With Why after observing a pattern among successful individuals and organizations. He noticed that the most influential leaders and businesses—like Apple, Martin Luther King Jr., and the Wright Brothers—had one thing in common: they operated from a clear sense of purpose (why).
This realization came during a personal low point in his life when Sinek was struggling professionally and emotionally. To regain clarity, he reflected on what truly motivated him. By focusing on his why—to inspire others—he rediscovered his passion and success. This journey of self-discovery led to the development of the Golden Circle framework.
Finding Purpose: why its even important
Right now, many of us are merely going through the motions. We are just getting things done without really understanding why we’re doing them. We work, study, and even lead without a clear sense of purpose. This leaves us feeling stuck, unmotivated, or disconnected.
But what if there’s a way to change that?
By discovering the “Why,” as Simon explains, we can find purpose in everything we do. It’s a simple idea that can help us stay focused, energized, and most importantly inspire others around us. Not only that It will also lead us to a more meaningful life. Let’s take a closer look at this concept, which Simon calls The Golden Circle.
The Golden Circle

- Why: This is the core belief or purpose behind what you do. It’s not about what you make or sell, but why you do it. It gives you the drive to keep going, even when things get tough. It’s your reason for existence.
- How: This is the process or approach you use to achieve your “Why.” It’s the unique way you do things that sets you apart from others. These are the values, actions, and principles that guide your decisions and behavior.
- What: This is what you actually do or produce. It’s the tangible results, products, or services that come from your actions. It’s what people see and experience, but it all starts with your “Why.”
Most people and companies focus on their actions first. They concentrate on what they do, like making a product or offering a service. They then figure out How to do it. Sometimes, they never stop to ask Why they’re doing it in the first place.
This often leads to short-term success but can leave them feeling disconnected or unmotivated over time.
Successful people and companies, on the other hand, start with Why. They clearly understand their purpose, their core belief. This connection gives them a deeper relationship with their work and the people around them. It also helps them stay focused. Additionally, it drives them onward with passion.
From Belief to Billions: Apple’s ‘Why’
Apple is a good example. They start with Why — to challenge the status quo and think differently. This belief has driven their innovation and success, making them one of the most valuable companies in the world.
Failure by Design: Missing the Why
In the book, Simon Sinek explains that many companies fail. They only focus on What they do. For example, some companies make great products but don’t have a clear Why. Eventually, these companies lose their direction and fail to inspire loyalty or growth.
The concept of Start with Why is highly relevant today, especially for management, CEO’s, and marketing leaders. In a world full of choices, businesses need a strong sense of purpose to stand out.
CEO’s who lead with a clear why can inspire their teams and align their company’s efforts.
Management can use this purpose to make better decisions and stay focused on what truly matters.
In marketing, the Why connects emotionally with customers, helping them feel part of a bigger mission.
This approach builds trust, loyalty, and long-term success, making it essential in today’s competitive environment.
Reflection – Finding My Why (and How You Can Too)
Coming back to my story, the TED Talk stayed with me long after the bus ride. That same evening, I ordered Start With Why by Simon Sinek. I wasn’t a bookworm, but something in that talk felt unfinished.
I needed more.
I read the book over the next few days. I found myself underlining lines and scribbling thoughts in the margins. I started asking myself questions I had never dared to before. Not “What do I want to do in life?”—but “What drives me when no one’s watching?”, “What impact do I want to leave behind?”, and “What moments in my life actually felt meaningful?”
It wasn’t an overnight epiphany. It was more like peeling layers off an onion—messy, slow, and at times uncomfortable. But within that discomfort, I started reconnecting with the things I once loved. I rediscovered the causes I cared about. The work that genuinely lit me up from within also became important again.
Your Turn – A Quiet Reflection
If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve felt this feeling too. It’s the quiet knowing that something’s off, even if everything “looks fine” on the outside.
I invite you to take a pause and ask yourself:
- When do I feel most alive?
- What kind of problems am I drawn to solving?
- What would I still do even if no one paid me?
You don’t need to journal for hours or meditate in the mountains. Just grab a pen, sit with these questions for 10 minutes, and write honestly. No one else is watching—this is just for you. That simple act of reflection was the beginning of clarity for me. Maybe it will be for you too.
Transformation – Living with Clarity, Not Just Busyness
Before I found my “why,” my days were packed — but not always purposeful. I was managing work, juggling family life, and experimenting with side projects like blogging and making videos.
But honestly? It felt like I was always chasing time, never catching it. Every task felt urgent. Every evening felt unfinished.
After reflecting deeply, something shifted. I didn’t change my job or take a huge leap of faith. I didn’t quit anything. Instead, I started choosing with intention. I stopped saying yes to everything. I began aligning each effort with a deeper purpose. Whether it was a blog post, a YouTube video, or a meeting at work, the aim was to inspire. I wanted to simplify learning and grow through sharing.
- My blog wasn’t just about content anymore; it became my personal learning lab.
- My YouTube channel techvedas.learn wasn’t just for reach; it became a medium to teach what I wish I had known earlier.
- My role at work started to feel more meaningful. I framed it as a way to build systems that help people. It was not just about ticking boxes.
- And my time with family? It became more present and more intentional.
- I was no longer trying to “fit everything in.” Instead, I was giving my energy to what truly matters to me.
To understand how the Golden Circle works in reality, let’s look at the journeys of Ratan Tata and Sandeep Maheshwari. They are two individuals who started with a clear “Why”. They built everything else around it.
Ratan Tata: A Visionary Driven by Purpose

Ratan Tata’s story is a perfect example of starting with “Why.” His leadership wasn’t only about building the Tata Group into a global brand. It focused on making a meaningful impact on society. He launched the Tata Nano to support middle-class families. He also funded rural development through philanthropy. His purpose has always been to improve lives.
He believed that when you lead with purpose, success and trust naturally follow. As he once said:
“Take the stones people throw at you and use them to build a monument.”
That quote reflects exactly how he lived — turning challenges into lasting change.
Sandeep Maheshwari: Leading with Purpose, Not Profit

Sandeep Maheshwari is a powerful example of starting with “Why.” Though he built a successful company, ImagesBazaar, he’s best known for his free motivational videos that have inspired millions. What sets him apart? He never monetized his YouTube channel — his mission has always been to help people, not earn from them.
He saw the struggles of everyday people and believed that motivation and life lessons should be free and accessible. By sharing practical, honest advice without any commercial agenda, he built deep trust and a loyal following.
Sandeep’s journey proves that when your “Why” is strong, people don’t just watch what you do. They believe in why you do it.
